Where Did the Money Go?

The basic profitability worksheet. Four numbers off your last 12 months (bank statements or your accounting software will do) and you'll see what the business actually kept. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Healthy or not, the next question is which jobs it came from. Run them through the margin check.

The check most owners have never done on paper

Turnover is the number that gets quoted at the pub. What's left after everything is the number that pays the mortgage, and plenty of owners have genuinely never sat down and worked it out. Money in, minus materials and subbies, minus overheads, minus what you paid yourself. Whatever's left is what the business kept. Some find out the answer is nothing. Some find out it's less than nothing, and the gap has been quietly living on the credit card.

The usual traps: calling your own pay "profit" (it isn't; it's a wage you'd have to pay anyone doing your job); forgetting the yearly hits like insurance and rego; and counting GST money sitting in the account as yours. It never was.

A healthy trade business pays the owner a proper market wage and still has profit left over. That leftover is the buffer that survives a slow month, a rained-out fortnight, an injury. If it's not there, the fix lives in pricing, job selection, or overheads. Finding which one is the whole point.

If the number's thin, or you had to guess at half the inputs, that's exactly what the Check-Up sorts out. No pitch, no obligation.
